Our Mascot: The Gryphon
Sarah Lawrence College's official mascot is the Gryphon. This mythological creature is a symbol of intelligence and strength, and is depicted as having the head and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion.

The men’s basketball team played their first game against Connecticut College in 1970, defeating Connecticut 82-70.

Navigation was added to the Athletic curriculum in 1948.

Athletic activities offered during the first year of the College (1928-1929) included Riding Club, Outing Club, Swimming, Golf, Tennis, Badminton, Archery, and Fencing.

Athletes of the Week
Elliott Warkus
Men's Tennis
This first year from Kamuela, HI, has been a major contributor to the Men's Tennis team all spring, capping off his season with the Gryphons' only win at this year's Hudson Valley Men's Athletics Conference Tennis Championships, besting his fifth seed singles opponent and helping the Gryphons take 5th overall at the tournament, beating out St. Joe's-Brooklyn.

Warkus is a two-sport varsity athlete for Sarah Lawrence, having competed in his first season with the men's soccer team in the fall.

Congratulations to Warkus on his victory at the HVMAC Tennis Championships, and on being your Gryphons' Athlete of the Week!

~ As the 2011-2012 Gryphons' Athletics seasons come to a close, this week's "Athlete of the Week" winner will be our last until fall. See you in September for another exciting year of Sarah Lawrence Athletics. Go Gryphons! Go Green! ~
Leslie Martinez
Softball
This first year from Mission Viejo, CA, led the Gryphons' softball team to a decisive victory against The College of New Rochelle at home on Friday, May 4. Martinez threw two strikeouts in this standout performance against the Blue Angels, which ended 18-6 for the Gryphons sole win of the spring.

Martinez has taken on numerous roles for the Gryphons in her first season with the softball team, starting in left field before moving into the third base position as needed, and finally answering the call to take the mound in the latter half of the season. Martinez performed with poise and enthusiasm on the field in any position.

Martinez is a two-sport varsity athlete for Sarah Lawrence, having also competed with the swim team in the 2011-2012 season.

Congratulation to Leslie Martinez, your Gryphons' Athlete of the Week!
